The kids are not all right

I cringe when I hear younger generations called apathetic, or entitled, or oblivious. I think that, if anything, they know all too well what’s going on.

I was born in 1964, so I’m either among the very last of the Boomers or the very first of Gen-X (depending who’s trying to sell me what). And yes, I see those qualities in the so-called Millennials and younger. But I see them every last bit as much in people my age and older.

Age, in and of itself, brings no knowledge, wisdom or goodness. I know plenty of ignorant, stupid and evil old people. And I think that hypocrisy is among the many things today’s kids observe and note.

Why do kids commit suicide in such huge numbers? Or engage in dangerous stunts on YouTube? Or record sex videos, or shoot up their classrooms? Because they’re all too aware. This world is used up, burned out. There is already nothing left for them.

They see this modern-day feudal system and know themselves the serfs. The best they can hope for is to work for one of the very corporations that have driven the world to this point, in return for healthcare and a 401(k) that will vaporize along with the company, sooner or later. In any case, they will have it worse than their parents did, and so on for their own kids.

And so they sit in their parents’ basements, losing themselves in their computer screens and trying to stay distracted until the inevitable end.

Younger people need to see that there is still cause to fight, and something worth fighting for. As the Democrats cruise towards their inevitable sell-out in 2020, we Greens have got to show them that we have a real chance — possibly humanity’s last one.
