Our criminal justice system has put a grossly disproportionate number of people of color behind bars, most for offenses that would have earned a privileged white kid a slap on the wrist. Once incarcerated, these people are stripped of their voting rights forever.
In practice, this is clearly a coordinated, long-term effort to criminalize being non-white, as was confirmed by a Nixon Administration official when asked about the so-called “war on drugs”.
The Justice Collaborative has published a call to Presidential candidates to openly support the restoration of voting rights to all people. I fully support and endorse this effort and will work towards that objective if elected.
